The Good Place: Season 3 is GREAT!

The Good Place is back for season 3 and the hit sitcom starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson is as great as it’s ever been. When we last saw our favorite people trying to escape The Bad Place, Good Place architect Michael (Ted Danson) argued in front of the Judge (Maya Rudolph) that four humans did not receive proper treatment.  Season 2 ended with a twist that stays true to the spirit of the series.…

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Should Stick to Film

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is able to take advantage of the long-form narrative storytelling but the action is few and far between. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan novels were so long that to make a film means having to condense the narrative.  When I first learned that a television series would happen, my first instinct was maybe this could be a good thing.  It has some positives to enjoy but unlike the films, the television series…

Star Wars Rebels: Season 4 on Blu-ray

The fourth and final season of Star Wars Rebels brings the series to an epic finish leaving fans with a satisfying conclusion. Going into the series’ final season, we knew that Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger would likely die.  Something would have to explain their missing from the Rebellion seen in the original trilogy.  While Kanan does indeed die to save the crew of the Ghost, Ezra takes his sacrifice to the next level in…

Ted Williams: “The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived”

In the newest American Masters, one of the greatest ballplayers to ever play the game gets profiled in Ted Williams: “The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived.” Ted Williams’ final stats from his playing days should carry an asterisk.  Not because of performance-enhancing drugs but because of the five years lost to military service.  Williams first served time in the U.S. Marines and lost out on three seasons.  Despite leaving, he would join the Reserves.  When…

Succession: The Dramatic Arrested Development

The best thing that one can say about the new HBO drama, Succession, is that it is the dramatic version of Arrested Development.  After that, it gets tricky. The series follows around the family of Logan Roy (Brian Cox), the CEO of Waystar Royco.  As the series starts, it’s assumed that Logan Roy would be retiring from the company.  After all, he’s 80 years old and can’t keep doing the job forever.  He’s married to his…

The first episode of a new Refinery29-produced fairy tale anthology series, Fabled, premiered during the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival this past week.  Titled “Anodyne,” the series offers us another take on some of the beloved fairy tale characters of all time. The series, created by Evan Jonigkeit and Girls alumnus Zosia Mamet, imagines a world in which Alice in Wonderland‘s titular Alice (Mamet) meets The Wizard of Oz‘s Dorothy (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) in a mental institution.  With…

Barry: Bill Hader Shines in Dark Comedy Series

Saturday Night Live veteran Bill Hader shines in the dark comedy, Barry, airing on HBO.  The role is a stark difference from what fans are used to seeing of Hader during his years on the long-running NBC sketch comedy show. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Barry Berkman (Bill Hader), is working as a hitman, where he’s being handled by Fuches (Stephen Root).  When the tender Chechen kingpin Goran Pazar (Glenn Fleshler) and…

The Switch’s Amy Fox talks Pose, transgender casting

The Switch creator Amy Fox, who I’ve previously interviewed, has released a statement following the news of upcoming FX series Pose casting five transgender actors. Fox’s statement in full: While we applaud the recent press coverage of FX’s forthcoming series,Pose, many of these stories have contained factual errors which misrepresent our company, and we hope to see them addressed or corrected. While Pose will no doubt make a strong case for high quality scripted transgender stories on…
