Transparent: Jeffrey Tambor Quits Series

Given the accusations against him, Transparent star Jeffrey Tambor has made the decision to quit his role in the Amazon series as Maura Pfefferman. The news of Tambor quitting the series comes following Transgender Awareness Week and one day before the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. Tambor gave a statement to Deadline: “Playing Maura Pfefferman on Transparent has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life,” the Emmy winning actor told Deadline on Sunday.…

The Switch’s Amy Fox talks Pose, transgender casting

The Switch creator Amy Fox, who I’ve previously interviewed, has released a statement following the news of upcoming FX series Pose casting five transgender actors. Fox’s statement in full: While we applaud the recent press coverage of FX’s forthcoming series,Pose, many of these stories have contained factual errors which misrepresent our company, and we hope to see them addressed or corrected. While Pose will no doubt make a strong case for high quality scripted transgender stories on…

Transgender Casting Call Set for October 22nd

The Casting Society of America has set a nationwide casting call for transgender talent for October 22, 2017. “The reasoning that a non diverse ‘star’ gets to play a diverse role is because there weren’t enough talented, diverse options is an industry myth,” said Russell Boast, VP of Casting Society of America.  “We’re going to do something about that.” Boast spoke to Solzy at the Movies in June with regards to improving transgender representation in…

Chicago Film Festival: Why I’m Not Screening Lola Pater

Lola Pater was one of 150 films selected to screen at the 53rd Chicago International Film Festival.  As a transgender film critic based in Chicago, I opted against screening the film in the lead-up to the first screening on Friday. You’re probably wondering why a transgender film critic would opt against screening Lola Pater, a film in which a transgender character plays a prominent role.  It comes down to said character being played by a…

Jen Richards talks Easy Living, Transgender Opportunities in TV/Film

Jen Richards took some time over the weekend to talk to Solzy at the Movies about her role in Easy Living and transgender opportunities in TV and film. Thanks for joining Solzy at the Movies today.  How are things treating you? Jen Richards:  The sun is shining, I had fried chicken for breakfast, and the Clash just came up on my iPad, so I’d say things are treating me rather well. You’re co-starring as Danny…

TRAILER: Transgender Actress Daniela Vega stars in A Fantastic Woman

Transgender actress Daniela Vega stars in A Fantastic Woman and could very well make history at the Oscars by becoming the first transgender actress nominated for an acting role in the foreign language film should Sony Pictures Classics play their cards right. Here’s the first US trailer for the film: Vegas stars as Marina, a young waitress and aspiring singer.  Her boyfriend, Orlando, falls ill and dies before reaching the hospital.  Instead of being able…

Doctor Who writer Gareth Roberts uses anti-trans slur in tweet

The Doctor Who series is no stranger to transphobia as actor John Barrowman pulled a transphobic stunt at San Diego Comic Con in July and now news comes that Gareth Roberts has posted a tweet with an anti-trans slur. Gareth Roberts tweeted: “I [love] how trannies choose names like Munroe, Paris and Chelsea. It’s never Julie or Bev is it? “It’s almost like a clueless gayboy’s idea of a glamorous lady. But of course it’s…

Cisgender Woman plays Transgender Woman in Lola Pater

A cisgender woman was cast as a transgender woman in Lola Pater, a French film that screened recently at the Locarno Film Festival. The film is directed by Nadir Moknèche and stars Fanny Ardant, Tewfik Jallab, Nadia Kaci. The synopsis for the film: “When his mother dies, Zino decides to find his father, Farid. But 25 years ago, Farid became Lola…” From the review in The Hollywood Reporter: One could question director Moknech’s decision to not use a real trans person…

Roseanne reboot seeks “Gender-Creative” Child despite Transphobic History

The reboot of Roseanne is reportedly seeking a gender-creative child despite series star Roseanne’s own personal transphobic history. Personally, I don’t think Roseanne Barr has changed her ways since earlier this year when she said that a transgender male should not be allowed to wrestle with the guys as she called testosterone a steroid.  She doesn’t understand what transgender people are going through nor does she want to. The announcement, which was reported by Fox…

TCA: GLAAD – Only 11 Transgender Characters on Television Series

According to today’s GLAAD panel at the TCA summer meetings, there are only 11 transgender characters on broadcast, cable, and streaming television series.  These numbers are as of today: August 4, 2017. These are numbers that need to improve because 11 is a small number when you factor in the 278 gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender characters (71 on broadcast, 142 on cable, 65 on streaming).  Of the 83 bisexual characters, there are 64 women…
