Academy Museum Will Now Open In September

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures announced another delay in opening the Academy Museum. After initially scheduled to open this month, the pandemic has brought about more changes to the schedule.  Earlier this year, the opening was moved until April 2021.  Now, the Academy has moved the opening date yet again.  This time, the museum is scheduled to open in September 2021.  No matter when it opens, it will certainly…

Oscars: Should The 2021 Ceremony Be Postponed?

The Academy’s Board of Governors is set to meet on Monday with the most pressing question being the delay of the 2021 Oscars ceremony. That next year’s Oscars ceremony is going to be delayed sounds like a no-brainer.  An eight week delay doesn’t seem like too big a deal.  After all, we’re still amid a pandemic so there’s no telling whether massive gatherings of this nature will be allowed.  Will other organizations follow suit?  So…

The Academy Shakes Up Awards Season For Oscars

In just two paragraphs this morning, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences found a way to shake up the process for the 94th Academy Awards. The news comes as part of the equity and inclusion initiative, Academy Aperture 2025.  It’s the newest phase in their ongoing efforts to advance inclusion in the industry and increase representation within the membership and film community.  While today’s press release focuses on the Oscars, governance, membership, and workplace…

Oscars 2020: Winners of the 92nd Academy Awards

The 92nd Oscars are being held tonight and Solzy at the Movies will be providing live updates throughout the Academy Awards broadcast this evening. Unfortunately, once again, there is no host tonight.  Sadly, the Academy couldn’t clone Bob Hope.  Was Billy Crystal not available again?  Can we please have a host next year?!? Before the show gets underway, here’s a look at my predictions one last time. Janelle Monae gets things started with “Won’t You…

Oscars 2020: 92nd Academy Awards Predictions

With the 92nd Oscars airing tonight on ABC, Solzy at the Movies offers predictions on how the Academy Awards will play out on Sunday night. Knives Out is not nominated for Best Picture tonight.  As such, I’m going with my second choice for Best Picture: Jojo Rabbit. My personal choice not withstanding, it’s hard to imagine the Academy not going for a film such as Parasite or 1917.  With the Academy being the Academy, there’s…

Oscars: Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards

John Cho and Issa Rae announced the 92nd Oscars nominations from the David Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. There’s a lot to be said about the upcoming Oscars, taking place on February 9, 2020.  For starters, not a single women director was deemed worthy of being one of the five best directors.  This is unfortunate when you have strong contenders such as Greta Gerwig, Marielle Heller, Lulu Wang, and Olivia Wilde. …

Emmy Awards Have A Documentary Problem

When the 71st Emmy Award nominations were announced, a number of Oscar-nominated documentaries received several nominations. While I am excited for some of the Emmy nominations this year, I remain disappointed in the continued documentary overlap between the Oscars and Emmys.  This is also one of those areas in which I find myself in high agreement with Steven Spielberg.  The director has certainly let his feelings be widely known when it comes to Netflix. This is…

Steven Spielberg, Netflix, and The Academy

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is taking his battle against Netflix all the way to The Academy when the next board meeting takes place in April. Without Steven Spielberg, I would never have developed an interest in film.  I’ve already written about this in an article on Jurassic Park in 2017.  It still kills me that I was’t able to be in the same theater as him during SXSW last year because of certain reasons.  I…

Green Book is not the Best Picture

While Roma was the film that many of us thought would win Best Picture, the tide took a turn when Green Book took home the award. I’ll be honest.  In my initial review, I gave Green Book a positive review.  This being said, my thoughts begin to evolve throughout the awards season.  This is because I of all the articles that I read over the past few months.  I’m one to admit in all seriousness…
