Dumbo gets the Live-Action treatment

The hour-long Dumbo gets the live-action treatment in a film running nearly double the run time of Disney’s 1941 animated classic. Max Medici (Danny DeVito) runs the Medici Bros. Circus and we’re introduced to all the characters moments into the film.  It’s post-war Sarasota, Fla. when Captain Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) returns home to children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins).  Things are much different from when the two children last saw their father.  For…

Mary Poppins Returns on Blu-ray

Mary Poppins Returns is now available for viewers to bring home in either 4K Ultra HD or Blu-ray with a number of bonus content available. The most interesting decision here is that director Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca’s audio commentary is available only as a digital exclusive.  Such commentaries have been a long-time staple of the physical release.  Some previous Disney releases have seen select featurettes available exclusively on digital.  To have the audio…

The Little Mermaid Celebrates 30 Years

The Little Mermaid will celebrate its 30th anniversary later this year but the film joins the Walt Disney Signature Collection with a new edition. Mermaid princess Ariel (Jodi Benson) has a dream of being human.  Much to her father’s dismay, Ariel frequently makes the journey to the surface.  It doesn’t matter that Atlantica King Triton (Kenneth Mars) forbids her from doing so.  Ariel is going to visit the humans because some dreams can’t be overcome. …

Kim Possible works in Live-Action

Not every animated series or film works in live-action but I feel that Kim Possible was able to pull it off in the newest Disney Channel Original Movie. A quick prologue–serving as a glorified cameo for Professor Dementor (Patton Oswalt)–sees Kim Possible (Sadie Stanley) in action alongside sidekick Ron Stoppable (Sean Giambrone).  The duo are aided by tech genius Wade (Issac Ryan Brown).  This takes place shortly before the duo enter the freshmen class at Middleton…

Disney’s Frozen 2 Teaser Trailer Shows Little

Disney released the Frozen 2 teaser trailer this morning and offers a few glimpses at what could happen in the sequel to the 2013 animated blockbuster. The film re-teams the Oscar-winning team that gave us Frozen in 2013, including co-directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck.  At the moment, IMDB credits Allison Schroeder with the screenplay for Frozen 2, based on characters created by Lee.  The voice cast returns Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh…

John Lasseter Hired By Skydance Animation

It was announced today by Skydance Animation that the studio has hired ousted Walt Disney Animation Studios/Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter. Lasseter was previously ousted by Disney following an investigation as a result of sexual harassment claims.  The former CCO was placed on a sabbatical in November 2017 when allegations first surfaced.  This led to his subsequent dismissal from Disney his role at several months later. This begs the question in this era of…

The Walt Disney Company Will Own The 2019 Box Office

Films under the Disney umbrella earned over $3 billion at the box office in 2018 but the company is looking to exceed expectations in 2019. When one looked at the 2018 calendar, Disney films accounted for at least one film every month.  As pointed out by The Big Picture, Disney CEO Bob Iger tightened things down to the point that the studio releases about a dozen films a year or less.  The Mouse didn’t release…

The Big Picture by Ben Fritz: A Must-Read Book

The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies by Ben Fritz likens the current era of Hollywood to the end of silent film and the studio system. The minute that Netflix decided to pursue original content is the moment that changed things.  For better or worse, Netflix is a player and they’re far from the only content provider from the streaming world.  They’re joined by both Amazon and Hulu as well.  When we…
