Girl: Cisgender Male wins award for Transgender Role at Cannes

Girl, since acquired by Netflix, has taken home not one but two awards at Cannes.  It’s frustrating to see this film take home any award.  The practice of Transface–casting cisgender people in transgender roles–is a practice that seriously needs to come to an end.  It’s no different than the casting of white people and making them up to appear as people of color.  If you wouldn’t cast someone in Blackface, don’t bother casting in Transface! …

Trailer: Dark Money

PBS Distribution has released the first trailer for Dark Money.  The film, directed by transgender director Kimberly Reed, first premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. During the 2018 Montclair Film Festival, the thrilling political documentary took home the David Carr Award for Truth in Non-Fiction Filmmaking. Synopsis: DARK MONEY, a political thriller, examines one of the greatest present threats to American democracy: the influence of untraceable corporate money on our elections and elected officials. The film…

Jonathan Kasdan: Lando Calrissian is Pansexual

Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan confirmed in an interview with The Huffington Post that Lando Calrissian is pansexual.  As far as major characters in the Star Wars universe are concerned, this makes Lando one of the first known person to be attracted to more than one gender.  He’s far from the only LGBTQ character as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo’s sexual orientation is made clear in the novel, Leia: Princess of Alderaan. So, given the opportunity to speak with…

Time’s Up: My Major Problem with Deadpool 2

Here we go again.  Another Time’s Up / #MeToo column for another film in which filmmakers left T.J. Miller in the cast. The major problem that I had with Deadpool 2 goes down to one thing: this film served as the perfect opportunity to recast T.J. Miller’s role of Weasel with the Deadpool brand of humor following allegations of assault and abuse.  Given the news stories that broke in December about allegations of sexual assault…

Black Panther arrives on Home Media

With Black Panther available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD, fans have the opportunity to make the return trip to Wakanda anytime! Whether it’s the women of Wakanda or bringing the story to the screen, the bonus features have a lot to offer viewers. When the film was released in February, it came with a shockwave that was not unlike last summer’s release of Wonder Woman.  As of May 13, 2018, the…

Black Cop Code Giveaway for iTunes

I’ve got a few codes to give away for Cory Bowles’ social satire, Black Cop, which premiered during the Toronto International Film Festival last year.  The film subsequently played the festival circuit, including a stop in Chicago in October. For a chance at winning one of the iTunes codes (Americans only, sorry), all you have to do is LIKE or RETWEET this tweet or LIKE this post on Facebook. Samuel Goldwyn Films released Black Cop…

The Best of Tribeca 2018

While I still have some reviews to crank out, here are some of the best offerings of what I saw during the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.  When one factors in all the categories offered, I saw a total of 39 narrative features, documentaries, and pilots during the festival. NARRATIVE FEATURE FILMS: My favorite narrative features to play during Tribeca include All About Nina, Egg, Song of Back and Neck, Jellyfish, Little Woods, The Miseducation of…

Tribeca 2018: What I’m Looking Forward To

The 2018 Tribeca Film Festival kicks off this week with the world premiere of Love, Gilda at the Beacon Theatre.  The festival runs April 18-29, 2018. There’s a lot that I’m looking forward to covering but most importantly, Disobedience is the film that hits home the most as an Orthodox Jewish transgender woman.  In the follow up to the Oscar-winning A Fantastic Woman, Sebastián Lelio directs Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola. As with anyone…

Shiva Baby: SXSW short a Vimeo Staff Pick

Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby, a short film that premiered during the 2018 SXSW Film Festival, is now a Vimeo Staff Pick. Emma Seligman’s short film is one of the funniest films I’ve ever seen to be set during a shiva.  This even takes the film adaptation of This Is Where I Leave You into account.  Rachel Sennott stars as Danielle, a college student who has hooked up with a sugar daddy.  It’s a great performance for the…

Ready Player One: Time’s Up Means Recasting!

The major problem with Ready Player One goes down to one thing: neither Steven Spielberg nor Warner Bros. Pictures decided to recast T.J. Miller’s role of I-R0k following allegations of assault and abuse.  Given the news stories that broke in December about allegations of sexual assault at college as well as my own personal experience, why didn’t Spielberg follow Ridley Scott’s lead with recasting the role?!? Miller’s character is nowhere to be seen in the…
