Oscars 2019: What do the Critics Choice Awards mean?

As we approach the Oscars, the awards landscape is looking to get locked in following the Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony airing on Sunday night. As the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) made their picks known during the Critics’ Choice Awards, things were noticeably different from last week’s Golden Globes Ceremony.  Most tellingly, Bohemian Rhapsody was completely shut out.  It’s a safe bet that the the film likely did not have a shot winning best picture. …

BAFTA Nominations Announced for 2019

The Favourite looks to be the film to beat as the EE Brtish Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) for 2019 were announced by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. While the Oscars have expanded to anywhere from five to ten nominees, BAFTA has stuck with five nominees.  One could look to the Best Picture winner to come from these five films: A Star is Born, Roma, The Favourite, BlacKkKlansman, and Green Book. BAFTA and…

DGA Nominations and Snubs

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2018. Once again, no women have been nominated.  I cannot stress this enough.  While Greta Gerwig was nominated for Lady Bird last year, you’d have to go back to Kathryn Bigelow’s nomination for The Hurt Locker (2009) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012).  Before this, the most recent nomination had been Sofia Coppola for Lost in…

The Oath: Ike Barinholtz’ Political Satire Hits DVD

A headline that sounds like it can only be ripped from the likes of The Onion, The Oath is the perfect political satire for the Trump era. Imagine every American being asked to sign an oath that states: “I pledge my loyalty to my President and my country and vow to defend them from enemies, both foreign and domestic.”  This is what writer-director Ike Barinholtz is asking us by watching The Oath.  It’s a new political…

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody Is Not The Best Picture

With the Golden Globes crowning Bohemian Rhapsody for Best Picture – Drama all thoughts turn to the Oscars and the inevitable Best Picture nomination of the Queen biopic. I want to get one thing straight.  I have nothing negative to say about Rami Malek’s performance as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.  His performance was absolutely suburb.  The problem with the film goes back to the screenplay’s embellishments.  The paint-by-numbers biopic embellishes so much of what we…

76th Annual Golden Globe Awards Predictions

The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air tonight on NBC.  I’m offering my predictions for tonight’s film and television awards even though it’s probably a crap-shoot. It’s always tricky when it comes to predicting the Golden Globe Awards because nobody truly knows how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will vote.  After all, this is the same group that previously nominated The Tourist for Best Comedy or Musical during their 68th Golden Globe Awards in 2011. …

Kevin Hart and the Oscars Host Controversy

The controversy surrounding comedian Kevin Hart and the Oscars continue to grow following the comedian’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. There have been no shortage of opinions being offered, be it Tre’vell Anderson, Ira Madison III, Don Lemon, David Mack, Harry Cook, and many more.  I echo many of their thoughts but especially this one: Ellen DeGeneres does not speak for the entire LGBTQ population. The original backlash started when people found some of…
