The Golden Globe Awards Don’t Need Our Attention

Last week’s Los Angeles Times expose into the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Golden Globe Awards was pretty damning. The only reason why the Golden Globe Awards get so much attention is because of the fact that it’s on NBC.  Well, the open bar makes for a laid atmosphere, too.  Take both away and they are no different than other groups of journalists voting for awards.  Oh, wait.  Can we even call them journalists?…

27th SAG Awards: Screen Actors Guild Nominations

The 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards nominations were announced by Lilly Collins and Daveed Diggs on Instagram. The SAG Awards are one of the pre-cursors to focus on heading into the Oscar nominations announcement because they have the biggest overlap with the actors’ branch of the Academy. One quick takeaway is that critics and the SAG-AFTRA voting body have a very different take on Hillbilly Elegy.  Hillbilly Elegy’s gain is Amanda Seyfried’s loss.…

2021 Sundance Film Festival Awards

The 2021 Sundance Film Festival Awards Ceremony, honoring CODA and Summer of Soul among others was held tonight virtually over YouTube. Patton Oswalt hosted the ceremony tonight in a way that only he can.  In typical Patton Oswalt fashion, the comedian took swipes at Pfizer and Moderna for what they would do with wooing A-list stars to their suites. Tonight’s ceremony followed the World, International, North American, U.S., or Utah premieres of 73 feature films…

Critics Choice Super Awards: My Ballot

The Critics Choice Super Awards aired on Sunday night and as a voting member, I would like to present how I voted for the movie awards. Voting took place over December 4-5, 2020.  Some categories were not easy when some of your favorite films were so close together.  In other categories, the decision was a no-brainer.  All in all, seven of my choices were the winners in their category. Like so many others, I have…

The Solzy Awards for 2020: The Best in Film

An annual tradition, Solzy at the Movies presents the Solzy Awards for 2020 as a way of honoring the best achievements this year in film. When it comes to the Solzy Awards, my criteria are usually the same as the Oscars with the traditional 7-day minimum release in Los Angeles and New York.  What differs this year is that I am not adding on January and February.  Personally, I would prefer that my awards-voting groups…

The Solzy Awards for Documentaries in 2020

The Solzy Awards for Documentaries in 2020 honor the best of the documentary films that were released during the past year. Last month, I voted in my second-ever Critic’s Choice Documentary Awards. Some of these awards do match how I voted during the CCDA. However, there were some instances in which my preferred documentary was not a nominee earlier this month.  In other instances, some of my categories were not a category up for voting…

The Solzy Awards for Short Films in 2020

If it is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving weekend, this means that it is time to present the Solzy Awards for Short Films in 2020. This certainly is not the traditional year for films. I’ll admit right now that I have not watched nor covered anywhere close to the amount of short films like in prior years.  Some of this definitely comes down to festivals getting cancelled. While SXSW and Tribeca got cancelled this year, many…
