1883, the Yellowstone spinoff series, makes its arrival on Blu-ray and DVD with over two hours of bonus features on both sets.

In an era where it feels like streaming TV series do not get home releases, 1883 is one of the exceptions to the rule. It’s not uncommon for Paramount to release their streaming series on home video. They did this before with Defending Jacob, which is available to stream on Apple TV+. Thanks to Yellowstone growing in popularity during the pandemic, the limited series had Paramount+’s largest series premiere to date.

1883 follows the Dutton family during their journey west through the Great Plains. Ultimately, we learn the story of how the Dutton family came to own Yellowstone Ranch. One could retell the story of Western expansion in so many ways but this particular one is through Taylor Sheridan’s eyes. When we first meet the Duttons, they’re hoping to leave poverty behind while searching for a better life. After the majority of the family travels from Tennessee to Fort Worth, they join James Dutton (Tim McGraw) on an European immigrant wagon train to Oregon. As Yellowstone viewers already know, they end up settling in Montana.

Series guest stars include Billy Bob Thornton, Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson. Isabel May, who stars as oldest daughter Elsa Dutton, also narrates the series.

Series creator Taylor Sheridan is also on record as saying that he sees the limited series as a 10-hour movie. After viewing the series during Memorial Day weekend in May, I find myself in agreement. That being said, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, was announced earlier this year. A sequel series to 1883, titled 1923, will premiere later this year. It will star Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford as the series focuses on a new generation of the Dutton family.

The home release comes too late to make any sort of dent in Emmy voting. Two cinematographers are up for Emmy nominations for their work in Limited Series, Anthology, or Movie. Both Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian are up for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score).
