The Cult of Zack Snyder strikes again as people are openly rooting for The Batman to fail when the Matt Reeves film is released.
When I came back online tonight, I saw a tweet appear on the timeline that I found very disturbing. I don’t know if it is just a few fans or a lot but apparently, there are Zack Snyder fans openly rooting for The Batman to fail. This is child-like behavior. Nobody should be rooting for a film to fail–well, unless Mel Gibson is in the cast or crew. He is among the exceptions because of his antisemitic behavior. I do not boycott films unless I know that antisemitic and transphobic bigots are in the cast or crew. The same also goes for my abuser, too, and he is still somehow managing to receive work in films and comedy clubs.

We are in living through a pandemic. One, if people are staying away, it’s because of health safety. It is not because of cult-like behavior. During the pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home is the only film to draw north of $250 million. It entered the weekend just shy of $750 million. No other film is close during the pandemic. Taking the 2022 box office into account and it’s the only film to cross $100 million (domestic) this year. A number of Oscar contenders underperformed and are seen as flops while Spider-Man is able to attract a substantial audience. That being said, the box office is still not back to the pre-pandemic levels. Who knows when this will happen. A number of WB films struggled at the box office but thanks to HBO Max, many consumers were able to watch from the safety of their homes.
Wonder Woman, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Man of Steel all grossed over $100 million during their opening weekend. The Batman is the biggest film coming out in theaters since Spider-Man: No Way Home. Omicron numbers are trending downward so I expect The Batman to finish well north of $200 million before the domestic run is over. Could the film do north of $400? We’ll just have to wait and see.
I gave some thought to not writing about this because of previous death threats from DC fans for not liking a film. It is very sad when merely writing about this subject is something that will open myself up to receiving threats. It should never have to come to this. Ever.
I look forward to seeing the new Matt Reeves film starring Robert Pattinson and no cult-like behavior is going to stop me from doing so.
Warner Bros. will release The Batman in theaters on March 4, 2022.
