Indiana Jones 5: John Williams Returns, Phoebe Waller-Bridge Signs On

Indiana Jones 5 (Lucasfilm)

Ahead of Indiana Jones 5, fans got some exciting news with John Williams returning and Phoebe Waller-Bridge signing on to star.

It was already confirmed that Harrison Ford would be reprising his role as legendary archaeologist Indiana Jones. James Mangold will be directing the fifth installment, taking over the director’s chair from Oscar winner Steven Spielberg What we didn’t know during Disney Investor Day was anything about the cast. Given Shia LaBeouf’s legal troubles, I would assume that he won’t be returning but nothing is confirmed as of now. What we do know about the film’s cast is that Ford will be joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. This isn’t Lucasfilm’s first go-around with Bridge. The Fleabag star offered comical relief three years ago in Solo: A Star Wars Story. No word yet on who she is playing in the film but I’m pretty sure she won’t be leading a campaign for droid liberation.

This morning’s news comes a few months shy of the franchise’s 40th anniversary. After Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, I was sure that John Williams would probably retire from film composing. I couldn’t be more happy to be wrong about this. It’s thrilling to know that he’s composing the score again for the franchise that started with Raiders of the Lost Ark. From the press release:

Williams’ unforgettable Indy soundtracks, packed with all the epic thrills, suspense, romance and excitement that fans have come to expect from an Indiana Jones movie, have become as beloved and familiar as the adventurer-hero’s signature hat and whip.

“I’m thrilled to be starting a new adventure, collaborating with a dream team of all-time great filmmakers,” said the film’s director James Mangold. “Steven, Harrison, Kathy, Frank, and John are all artistic heroes of mine. When you add Phoebe, a dazzling actor, brilliant creative voice and the chemistry she will undoubtedly bring to our set, I can’t help but feel as lucky as Indiana Jones himself.”

Kathleen Kennedy, Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel will serve as producers.

Indiana Jones 5 is scheduled to open in theaters on July 29, 2022.
