Sarah Silverman Talks Casting Non-Jews As Jews

In her recent podcast, Sarah Silverman commented about the recent casting of Kathryn Hahn as the late Jewish comedian Joan Rivers. Speaking on her podcast, the comedian remarked: “There’s this long tradition of non-Jews playing Jews, and not just playing people who happen to be Jewish, but people whose Jewishness is their whole being. One could argue, for instance, that a gentile playing Joan Rivers correctly would be doing what is actually called ‘Jewface.’” Silverman…

The Last Letter From Your Lover

The Last Letter From Your Lover spans both past and present in the Augustine Frizzell-directed film adaptation of JoJo Moyes’s novel. It’s hard to believe that this film was directed by Augustine Frizzell because it’s nothing like her debut feature, Never Goin’ Back! Frizzell’s own history with her husband, filmmaker David Lowery, is why she’s directing the film. Because of her background, she is the perfect director for the film! Ellie Haworth (Felicity Jones) is…

The Midnight Sky: A Modern-Day On The Beach

The Midnight Sky, directed by and co-starring George Clooney, is a modern-day version of Stanley Kramer’s Oscar-nominated On the Beach. Living in isolation is one of the major things to come out of 2020.  To no surprise, one of the biggest film’s of the year is about just that.  No, there isn’t a pandemic but the planet is suffering.  Is humanity heading towards the verge of extinction?  Quite possibly.  And yet, George Clooney does one…

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – Road to IX

Jyn Erso kicks ass in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the stand-alone anthology film that paves the way for the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. This may contain spoilers for Rogue One. Rogue One is the first Star Wars opening crawl to be given a live-action adaptation.  This film did not disappoint at all.  Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) provides the franchise with another strong independent woman.  One that young women can look…

Toronto 2019: The Aeronauts

The Aeronauts is an adventure thriller that takes place in the skies while seeking to soar to the highest heights in history. The film reteams The Theory of Everything stars Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne as balloonist Amelia Wren and scientist James Glaisher, respectively.  While Glaisher existed in real life, Wren is made up solely for the film.  I can understand the reasoning behind this even as it takes Henry Coxwell out of the picture. …

On the Basis of Sex: A Conventional Biopic At Best

The spotlight is on Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in On the Basis of Sex as the future justice begins her fight against gender discrimination. A lot of what gets covered in this film was also covered in the Solzy Award-winning documentary, RBG.  This makes so much of the film feel rather redundant to say the least.  I won’t lie in that I questioned why would someone want to watch a biopic when one…
