Ruby Sparks Marks 10th Anniversary

Ruby Sparks, starring Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, recently marked the tenth anniversary since the film’s theatrical release in 2012. “I started seeing her this morning. It’s like that movie Harvey. Except she’s not a giant rabbit.” – Calvin Weir-Fields I meant to get to the rewatch ahead of Monday’s 10th anniversary. With the Hall of Fame inductions and home entertainment releases on Tuesday, I simply ran out of time. In any event, the film…

Being The Ricardos: I Love Lucy But Not This Film

Being The Ricardos may try its best but the new film–written and directed by Aaron Sorkin–contains a host of problems. First and foremost, Javier Bardem is from Spain, not Cuba. To have better representation, the actor playing Desi Arnaz should be from Cuba. Depending on who you speak with, this is potentially a major problem. Sorkin’s opinion on the matter–see interview link below–is that “Spanish and Cuban aren’t actable.” He believes that the same also…

Tribeca 2020: Love Spreads

Love Spreads is an exploration of the creative process when the pressure is mounting on band members to put together another album. Following the end of their first tour, the members of Glass Heart head to Rockfield Studios to record their sophomore album.  The trio–and their band manager–are couped up there in an effort to create some music.  Like any sophomore effort, the pressure is on and for singer-songwriter Kelly (Alia Shawkat), it starts to…

Izzy Gets the F Across Town is messy

Izzy Gets the F Across Town may mean well but the small indie comedy tends to be a bit of a mess. Mackenzie Davis does her best to carry the film in the titular role of Izzy but it’s not enough to keep the film going.  Given where she is at the start of the film, it’s as if the film is the indie version of the classic comedy, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.  We go from…

Tribeca 2018: Duck Butter

Taking place over the course of 24 hours, the relationship-driven Duck Butter may be a lesbian-themed film but there’s so much more to the film than just that alone. Before the film gets into the thick of the action, it’s learned early on that Naima (Alia Shawkat) is an actress currently working in a Duplass Brothers film with the likes of Jake (Kumail Nanjiani) and Kate (Lindsay Burdge).  Because the film takes place over the…

TBS unveils 2017 Fall Slate, renews Angie Tribeca for Fourth Season

In addition to unveiling their fall slate, TBS has renewed police comedy Angie Tribeca for a fourth season. The news comes during the Television Critics Association bi-annual meeting.  Not only is the series, starring Rashida Jones, renewed but the fourth season will welcome two-time Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale.  Is this an effort to attract some interest from the Emmy Awards voters?  Maybe. In getting renewed, Angie Tribeca becomes the first of the recent TBS comedies…
