TCA: GLAAD – Only 11 Transgender Characters on Television Series

According to today’s GLAAD panel at the TCA summer meetings, there are only 11 transgender characters on broadcast, cable, and streaming television series.  These numbers are as of today: August 4, 2017. These are numbers that need to improve because 11 is a small number when you factor in the 278 gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender characters (71 on broadcast, 142 on cable, 65 on streaming).  Of the 83 bisexual characters, there are 64 women…

No More Points for @Midnight on Comedy Central

The late night game show, @midnight with Chris Hardwick, will appear tonight for the last time.  After 600 episodes, the comedian made the decision to bid adieu. This was a series that was made for a site like Twitter with all the hashtag games.  It also introduced us to many comedians we never heard of or gave us an opportunity to see familiar comedians on the panel. Hardwick would spend the half hour on the…

Directed by Frankie Fenton and narrated by Colin Farrell, we learn about Simon Fitzmaurice’s story.  The film is on the short side with a running length of 77 minutes. The Dark Tower: Proceed Heavily With Caution

The Dark Tower does it’s best to introduce us to a fantasy world created by novelist Stephen King but it would have been better off as a mini-series rather than starting a film franchise that serves as a rebooted sequel to the books. Based on the novels by Stephen King, Nikolaj Arcel directs from a screenplay written by Akiva Goldsman & Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen & Nikolaj Arcel.  The film stars Idris Elba,…

Dave Chappelle’s Transgender Jokes are Transphobic, Not Funny

It has been reported by that comedian Dave Chappelle is still making transphobic jokes at the expense of the transgender community–and he’s still missing the point. It’s not funny and if you think it is, you’re dead wrong. If you are cisgender, let me remind you that cis people don’t get to choose what’s transphobic nor do they get to tell transgender people what is or isn’t transphobic.  If a trans person tells you something…

I Won’t See The Emoji Movie

(Hi there, if you’re being directed here from an article about TJM’s email, please click here). Heading into the tail end of last week, there was no score reported on Rotten Tomatoes for The Emoji Movie and there’s a reason for this–it wasn’t offered to us as a press screening.  In other words, if we wanted to consider this film for awards season, we’ll have to see it ourselves. I’m not going to consider it…

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is A Must-See, Powerful Film

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is a powerful film that will leave you talking days after you finish watching the movie and one that is on my short list for the best documentary this year. Co-directed by Jon Shenk and Bonnie Cohen, the married team behind Actual Films, the film is a follow up to the Oscar-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, about climate change.  This could have easily have been a stand-alone film with…

Colossal, An Underrated Sci-Fi Comedy, Now On Blu-Ray

Colossal, the underrated sci-fi comedy released this past April is now available on Blu-ray and Digital HD. Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, the indie film stars Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell, and Tim Blake Nelson. Produced on a budget of $15 million, the film did not do anywhere near where it should at the box office as it only brought in $4.3 million.  The comedy is one of my favorites this…
