Turner & Hooch gets the reboot approach with Josh Peck taking over the leading duties but Tom Hanks’s presence is still felt in the series.
How do you replace Tom Hanks? The simple answer is that you can’t because it’s impossible. However, they try their best anyway. In this instance, Josh Peck is starring as rookie US Marshall Scott Turner. His dad happens to be the late Detective Scott Turner (Tom Hanks, who will only appear via photos in the background). The problems for the younger Turner begin the minute that sister Laura (Lyndsy Fonseca) drops off a French Mastiff, Hooch. Hooch causes trouble from the very minute that he arrives. Not a single item is safe in Turner’s apartment but we aren’t the least bit surprised.
Turner gets a love interest by way of Erica Mounir (Vanessa Lengies). She heads up the US Marshalls dog training program and comes to Turner’s rescue when he starts bringing Hooch into work. Of course, this is before Turner’s ex, Brooke Mailer (Becca Tobin), comes back into the picture during the third episode. Press only got the first three episodes to view so it’ll be interesting to see what happens on that front. Will there be a love triangle forcing him to make a choice? Time shall tell as there are twelve episodes airing weekly in total.
Turner’s partner is Jessica Baxter (Carra Patterson). She’s very pregnant and still going out in the field. Another US Marshal working out in the field is Xavier Wilson (Brandon Jay McLaren). There’s enough quirky characters that fill out the US Marshals, too. There’s ample opportunities for a mix of both comedy and action in Turner & Hooch. At times, the action feels a bit too violent for Disney+ but honestly, it’s not much different from what we see in the Marvel Studios titles.
Reginald VelJohnson is set to reprise his role as as David Sutton, who has since been elected to mayor. However, he doesn’t appear during the first three episodes of the series. While Hanks appears in photos only, Mare Winningham doesn’t return to portray Dr. Emily Turner. The role is bring played by someone else.
Going off of the first three episodes, I can say that there’s enough in Turner & Hooch to keep my interest. I’ll certainly keep tuning in on Wednesdays after the Olympics finish.
