Kurt Albrecht talks The Mitchells vs. The Machines

Kurt Albrecht shot by Michael Lewis at the SPA offices in April 2019.

Kurt Albrecht took part in a Netflix press conference for the Critics Choice Association to discuss The Mitchells vs. The Machines.

Albrecht joins Oscar-winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller in producing the new film. Mike Rianda co-directs with Jeff Rowe and the pair wrote the screenplay. The film features a star-studded cast including Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric Andre, Olivia Colman, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Charlyne Yi, Blake Griffin, Conan O’Brien, Doug the Pug, Sasheer Zamata, Elle Mills, Alex Hirsch, and Jay Pharoah.

What was it about The Mitchells vs. The Machines that drew your interest?

Kurt Albrecht: It really was the fact that it was an original property and the filmmaker was creating it himself. It makes my job in backing him so much easier because he has all the answers to the questions. You know what Rick would do, you know what Katie would do. I wouldn’t say it was easy to make this movie but it really ran pretty smoothly because Mike really had a very clear vision. We weren’t hunting around or finding—it was pretty clear, Mike. I think that that for me was really interesting. And then a chance to work with Phil and Chris is always a great thing. But it was supporting a young filmmaker and helping him get his vision on screen. That was a big part of what drew me to it.

Netflix launches The Mitchells vs. the Machines on April 30, 2021.
