Super Bowl LV: The 2021 Movie Trailer TV Spots

Super Bowl LV (CBS Sports).

While some advertisers are sitting out, studios are using Super Bowl LV to launch movies by reminding you that they still exist in TV spots.

A number of TV spots will be featured during the course of tonight’s big game.  The question I’m asking is whether or note their current release dates hold.

Prior to the game, Universal Pictures released TV spots for both F9 and NobodyF9 is the ninth chapter in the Fast & Furious saga. While Universal released a number of films in theaters and subsequently on VOD, F9 is one of the few films they’ve delayed so that audiences can experience the film in theaters.

Ilya Naishuller directors Nobody from a script by Derek Kolstad. The film stars Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, RZA, Alexey Serebryakov and Christopher Lloyd

Just before kickoff, Disney aired a TV spot for Raya and the Last Dragon. The film releases in theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on March 5, 2021.

YouTube Originals film Life In a Day 2020 was just released over the weekend. Kevin MacDonald directs the film, which just premiered during the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.  Macdonald also directs The Mauritanian, which opens on February 12. I will update when the TV spot gets posted but the above link will take you to the film itself.

M. Night Shamalayan’s Old will only open in theaters this summer. The film is described as a “chilling, mysterious new thriller about a family on a tropical holiday who discover that the secluded beach where they are relaxing for a few hours is somehow causing them to age rapidly…reducing their entire lives into a single day.”

The first Marvel spot of the night for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.  Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, respectively.  Sam and Bucky came together during the final minutes of Avengers: Endgame and the season sees them teaming up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience.  Directed by Kari Skogland with Malcolm Spellman serving as head writer, the series also stars Daniel Brühl as Zemo, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker. The TV spot advertised the full trailer, which you can watch right here!  The all-new, six-episode series arrives March 19, only on Disney+.

That ends the first quarter.  The second quarter has been rather light as far as non-CBS/Viacom spots are concerned.

Finally another TV spot for a film during the third quarter! This time, it is Coming to America sequel Coming 2 America.  Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began. Coming 2 America stars Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, with Wesley Snipes and James Earl Jones.  Craig Brewer directs from a screenplay written by Kenya Barris and Barry W. Blaustein & David Sheffield. The film arrives exclusively to Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021.

CBS Sports broadcasts its 21st Super Bowl, the most of any Network, with its coverage from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. for Super Bowl LV on Sunday, Feb. 7. Super Bowl LV kicks off at 6:30 PM ET.
