Wonder Woman 1984 to HBO Max or Summer 2021

GAL GADOT as Wonder Woman in Warner Bros. Pictures’ action adventure “WONDER WOMAN 1984,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Wonder Woman 1984 will either get an early streaming release on HBO Max or be postponed yet again until summer 2021.

We all saw the writing on the wall.  Would Warner Bros. be able to stick the landing or have to postpone again?  Listen, I love the theatrical experience.  One always expects to this this kind of film on the big screen.  We are in a global pandemic.  Studios have make a big decision in this instance.  Do you delay until summer?  Or do you keep to the December date and stream less than a month later?  This is a big decision.  Blockbuster tentpoles are made for audiences to the small screen.  Audiences want to enjoy the film in a communal experience.

So what happens now?  This is certainly the question of the hour.  Internet reports suggest that Warner Bros. will stick to the current release date on December 25, 2020  This also comes with a catch.  What they would do is place the film on HBO Max shortly thereafter.  This is not going to sit well with a lot of people.  Event films are made for the big screen, not the small.  Another thing here is that you’ll also lose the Roku and Amazon Fire audiences.  At last check, neither have made a deal for HBO Max.  If you’re aiming for a short theatrical, this is going to upset a lot of people.

Cases are rising across the country.  There is no guarantee that theaters will be open in December.  Patty Jenkins insists on a theatrical experience.  For the best audience experience, Wonder Woman 1984 needs a summer release.  If I cannot see this in theaters, I would like to experience the film in 4K.  HBO Max also cannot promise this as of now.  They do not currently allow films to screen in 4K.

Gal Gadot stars alongside Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen.  Patty Jenkins directs from a screenplay written with Geoff Johns and David Callaham.  Jenkins and Johns pen the story.

Warner Bros. is currently scheduled to release Wonder Woman 1984 on December 25, 2020.
