Oscars 2020: Winners of the 92nd Academy Awards

The 92nd Oscars are being held tonight and Solzy at the Movies will be providing live updates throughout the Academy Awards broadcast this evening.

Unfortunately, once again, there is no host tonight. Sadly, the Academy couldn’t clone Bob Hope. Was Billy Crystal not available again? Can we please have a host next year?!?

Before the show gets underway, here’s a look at my predictions one last time.

Janelle Monae gets things started with “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” The tears have started! We’re starting off the Oscars with a musical montage with costume designs that pay tribute to this year’s films.

Janelle Monae: “We celebrate all the women who directed phenomenal films.”

Steve Martin: “The Academy has switched to the new Iowa Caucus app.”

Both Steve Martin and Chris Rock make a pointed dig at the lack of women nominated for Best Director. Rock also points out the lack of people of color nominated in the acting categories by way of Cynthia Erivo’s nomination for Harriet.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role: Brad Pitt, Once upon a Time…in Hollywood

Brad Pitt gets political by mentioning he has 45 more seconds than the U.S. Senate gave John Bolton. Brad’s full speech at the Oscars:

Wow. Thank you, this is incredible, really incredible. Thank you to the Academy for this honor of honors. They told me I only have 45 seconds up here, which is 45 seconds more than the Senate gave John Bolton this week. I’m thinking maybe Quentin does a movie about it, in the end the adults do the right thing. This really is about Quentin Jerome Tarantino. You are original, you are one of a kind. The film industry would be a much drier place without you and I love the ethos you gave Cliff Booth. Look for the best in people, expect the worst but look for the best. Leo, I’ll ride on your coattails any day, man. The view’s fantastic. And to the rest of the cast and crew: big bad Bob Richardson, Robert Garcia, Richie, my man Mike Moh. You know, I also want to say, you know, while we’re doing all this, it’s time we give a little love to our stunt coordinators and our stunt crews. Listen, I’m a bit gobsmacked. I’m not one to look back but this has made me do so and I think of my folks taking me to the drive-in to see BUTCH AND SUNDANCE, and loading up my car and moving out here, and Gina and Ridley giving me my first shot to all the wonderful people I’ve met along way, to stand here now: “Once upon a time…in Hollywood.” Ain’t that the truth. This is for my kids, who color everything I do. I adore you. Thank you.

Best animated feature film of the year: Toy Story 4 (Josh Cooley, Mark Nielsen, and Jonas Rivera)

Best animated short film: Hair Love (Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver)

Matthew A. Cherry: “Hair Love was done because we wanted to see more representation in animation.”

Josh Gad introduces Frozen 2‘s Idina Menzel by making a dig at John Travolta’s introduction a few years ago.

Even without a host, an actor or actress is going to introduce a presenter. Meanwhile, this bit with Diane Keaton and Keanu Reeves is getting awkward and old really fast.

Thank you. Amazing, thank you. This is really light, this one’s light. It’s supposed to be heavy. I’d like to thank my mother. Don’t know where you are, Mum. I lost you, hours ago. Thank you for being my mother, and for, I mean, for many other reasons. For giving me the book that I adapted, and this film wouldn’t have existed without you doing that. To Christine, for writing the book, thank you. To the producers of the film, Carthew Neal and Chelsea Winstanley, who was there right from the beginning, thank you, guys. Many other people that I want to thank but I won’t because I can’t remember them. That’s it. This is really great. Best live action short film: The Neighbors’ Window (Marshall Curry)

Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph aren’t happy with something. It’s too early for best director. It turns out to be an act and they wanted directors to know they can do more than comedy. Martin Scorsese is losing it in the audience!

Achievement in production design: Once upon a Time…in Hollywood (Production Design: Barbara Ling; Set Decoration: Nancy Haigh)

Maya and Kristen make it a bit once again.

Achievement in costume design: Jacqueline Durran, Little Women

I love that Roger and Chaz Ebert are the last people featured in the video clip coming out of commercial break. Life Itself is one of the biggest snubs in Oscars history.

Best documentary feature: American Factory (Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert, and Jeff Reichert)

Julia Reichert: “We believe things will get better when workers of the world unite.

Best documentary short subject: Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) (Carol Dysinger and Elena Andreicheva)

Performance by an actress in a supporting role: Laura Dern, Marriage Story

Lin-Manuel Miranda introduces a clip about music transforming film and vice versa. The last thing anyone expected was Eminem performing at the Oscars.

Achievement in sound editing: Donald Sylvester, Ford v Ferrari

This is one of the last Oscars to go to a film made by Fox. The fact that 1917 didn’t win this particular Oscar also doesn’t bode well for taking home Best Picture at the Oscars. They were expected to win this. That’s not to take away from the equally impressive Ford v Ferrari.

Achievement in sound mixing: Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson, 1917

Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus star in Downhill, in theaters this Friday! Not that you really need the Oscars to remind you.

Achievement in cinematography: Roger Deakins, 1917

Deakins wins for the second time in fifteen nominations.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was cut out of both Parasite and 1917! It was originally Ford v Ferrari v Ferrell.

Achievement in film editing: Michael McCusker and Andrew Buckland, Ford v Ferrari

The Academy Museum gets a promo much to the aid of Tom Hanks. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will open its doors on December 14, 2020 (announced by Hanks) at Fairfax and Wilshire.

Achievement in visual effects: Guillaume Rocheron, Greg Butler, and Dominic Tuohy, 1917

I did not need this Cats nightmare of a bit at all. With 1917 taking home another technical win, it’s looking like it could very well take home Best Picture. Only a few more awards left.

Achievement in makeup and hairstyling: Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan and Vivian Baker, Bombshell

Sandra Oh is 87 and Ray Romano is really Charlize Theron.

Best international feature film of the year: Parasite (South Korea)

This is the first South Korean film to be nominated and take home the Oscar. Bong Joon Ho is so happy to be the first recipient under the new name and applauds/supports the new direction.

Taika Waititi acknowledges the ancestral lands before acknolwedging the recipients of the Governor’s Awards. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) come out on stage. “All women are superheroes.” For the first time in Oscar history, a woman conducts the nominated scores.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score): Hildur Guðnadóttir, Joker

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song): “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again,” Rocketman (Music by Elton John; Lyric by Bernie Taupin)

Achievement in directing: Bong Joon Ho, Parasite

This may be one of the biggest shocks of the night since it was expected that Sam Mendes would win for 1917. Bong Joon Ho shouts out Martin Scorsese, who receives a standing ovation. “When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese’s films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor, I never thought I would win.” He also thanks Quentin Tarantino. He also shouts out both Todd Phillips and Sam Mendes.

Steve Spielberg introduces the In Memoriam segment. Billie Eilish performs “Yesterday” in tribute. There was a lot of speculation about what she would be performing. I kind of expected her performance would come during the In Memoriam tribute.

Performance by an actor in a leading role: Joaquin Phoenix, Joker

No surprise about his speech after the speech last weekend at the BAFTAs. Not a single person associated with the film was thanked.

Performance by an actress in a leading role: Renée Zellweger, Judy

Best motion picture of the year: Parasite (Kwak Sin Ae and Bong Joon Ho, Producers)

Parasite is the first foreign language film to take home Best Picture. Before you ask, my parents won’t even bother to see it because they refuse to read a movie.
