Oscars 2020: 92nd Academy Awards Predictions

Preparations continue for the 92nd Oscars on Thursday, February 6, 2020. The Oscars will be presented on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, CA and televised live by the ABC Television Network.

With the 92nd Oscars airing tonight on ABC, Solzy at the Movies offers predictions on how the Academy Awards will play out on Sunday night.

Knives Out is not nominated for Best Picture tonight.  As such, I’m going with my second choice for Best Picture: Jojo Rabbit.

My personal choice not withstanding, it’s hard to imagine the Academy not going for a film such as Parasite or 1917.  With the Academy being the Academy, there’s always the possibility that Quentin Tarantino’s love letter, Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood, wins the night.  The latter is full of technical achievements so we’ll certainly see what happens tonight.  The trick that I’ve found over the years is to follow how the guilds vote.  In most instances, the Academy tends to follow the guilds in voting.  Sometimes, the are in disagreement.

The main acting awards seem to be a lock.  Granted, I still don’t understand why it is that the Golden Globes go first and everyone seems to follow with their choices.  Last night’s Indie Spirit Awards had winners that will substantially differ tonight because of the voting body.  That and some films were ineligible given their production budgets.

In a perfect world, Apollo 11 would be taking home Best Documentary.  Unfortunately, the Solzy Award-winning documentary was not nominated by the Academy.  It marks the second consecutive year in which the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards winner was snubbed come Oscar nominations.
