Tribeca 2019: Nick Borenstein’s 99 and Sweater

Actor-filmmaker Nick Borenstein had a pair of shorts, 99 and Sweater, screen in the Tribeca N.O.W. program during the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.

Both of these are very different films but they’re both comedies.  In 99, both mother (Kathryn Markey) and son (Borenstein) are shopping in a 99 cent store for a bar mitzvah gift.  She’s a frequent customer so it comes as no surprise that many of the store’s employees know who she is.  How frequent?  She’s there frequently enough that they know when to set something aside for her.

As for Sweater, a guy (Borenstein) is off to a bad day after a potential date never gets off the ground.  It gets worse when he drops a pizza while being asked to take a photo for a newly engaged couple.  The only saving grace comes when he gets a free coffee.  This wouldn’t feel so out of place if it weren’t for the whole flash mob dream-like sequence.  The flash mob comes out of nowhere to tell you the truth.

CAST:  Nick Borenstein, Jonathan Marballi, Evan Hoyt Thompson, Lauren Ireland, Daniel Jaffe, Yedoye Travis

Both 99 and Sweater held their world premiere during the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival in the Tribeca N.O.W. program.
