BAFTA Nominations Announced for 2019

BAFTA/Marc Hoberman

The Favourite looks to be the film to beat as the EE Brtish Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) for 2019 were announced by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

While the Oscars have expanded to anywhere from five to ten nominees, BAFTA has stuck with five nominees.  One could look to the Best Picture winner to come from these five films: A Star is Born, Roma, The Favourite, BlacKkKlansman, and Green Book.

BAFTA and the DGA noticeably differ when it comes to the nominations for Best Director.  Yorgos Lanthimos and Pawel Pawlikowski are in while Peter Farrelly and Adam McKay are out.

Among the acting nominations, most telling is that BAFTA voters preferred Steve Coogan’s performance as Stan Laurel over John C. Reilly as Oliver Hardy.  Coogan replaces John David Washington when compared to the SAG Awards.  Similarly, Viola Davis and Claire Foy replace Emily Blunt for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.  Similarly, Sam Rockwell is in while Sam Elliott is out.

The announcement comes while Oscar nominations voting is still taking place through January 14, 2019.
