Justin Rupple will take over the role of Tuffnut upon the release of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in February.
Ever since abuse allegations became public in December 2017, there were questions about whether or not a certain actor would be recast in upcoming films. After director Ridley Scott replaced Kevin Spacey in with Christopher Plummer in All the Money in the World, there were questions as to whether Ready Player One or Deadpool 2 would follow suit. Unfortunately, neither film would replace said actor.
In light of the #MeToo movement, the lack of recasting in either film was very disappointing. When those two films didn’t recast, all eyes turned to How to Train Your Dragon. After all, this is a family friendly film! In interviews or a special look during TIFF, there was nothing but silence. Because of the silence, it was assumed that no recasting would take place. As such, I decided that I would not be seeing this film. The good news came today that Justin Rupple is providing the voice of Tuffnut. This news was confirmed on both Twitter and when the review embargo lifted.
With more than enough time to recast the role, not doing anything would have been the ultimate disappointment. Sure enough, the Dean DeBlois-directed film recast the role of Tuffnut much to everyone’s surprise.
