As Angie Tribeca returns for Season 4 with a two-day marathon, the cop satire jumps into the future while offer no shortage of laughs.
It’s been well over a year since we last saw Angie Tribeca (Rashida Jones). This fourth season takes place some 20 years following the events of season 3. Angie’s son, Angie Jr. (Bobby Cannavale), grew up without having any kind of relationship with his mother. In any event, Angie finds herself reunited with her old team–minus a few–when she gets herself recruited for the Special Division Force. The SDF reports to Vice President Joe Perry (Matthew Glave) so nobody can blame Angie for her cynicism about the role.
New members to the team include applied psychologist Maria Charo (Kiersey Clemons) and Hoffman’s grandson, Hoffman (Jagger). We still get the same funny and deadpan performances from Lt. Atkins (Jere Burns) and Dr. Scholls (Andrée Vermeulen). Out this season are Hayes MacArthur and while he is longer a series regular, Dean Cole makes an appearance as DJ Tanner.
Created by Steve Carell and Nancy Walls Carell, this season is packed with a lineup of guest stars over the ten-episode season. Most notable is Saturday Night Live alumnus Taran Killam, whose Pierre Cardin appears similar in looks to Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. I don’t want to give away too much but you have to watch it for yourself. Nobody appears to be overacting while everyone looks like they’re having fun.
How are the laughs? They are unstoppable this season. Under showrunner Ira Ungerleider, no genre or film goes unscathed when it comes to the satire. Some of these spoofs are outright given away in episode titles. There are so many visual or verbal gags packed in just over 20 minutes of fun. While some episodes may deal with a unique case, others point towards a season long arc. I’d tell you but it would honestly just take all the fun out of watching. In any case, they manage to outdo themselves as they do every season. The writers have written this season in a way that plays for the binge viewing on TBS. Not many sitcoms are able to pull this off!
With comedy spoofs that know no bounds, Angie Tribeca is the hysterically fun and satirical sitcom that we need to close out the year that was 2018.
