Fantasia: Tragedy Girls brings comedy to the slasher genre

Tragedy Girls

Tragedy Girls is a horror comedy that offers us a fresh comedic take to the slasher genre.

Directed by Tyler MacIntyre, who co-wrote the film with Chris Lee Hill based on an original screenplay by Justin Olson, the film stars Alexandra Shipp, Brianna Hildebrand, Jack Quaid, Josh Hutcherson, Timothy V. Murphy, Nicky Whelan, Austin Abrams, Kerry Rhodes, with Kevin Durand, and Craig Robinson.

Sadie Cunningham (Shipp) and McKayla Hooper  (Hildebrand) are best friends living in the small town of Rosedale.  They have a social media obsession and won’t stop at anything when it comes to getting famous, even if it means killing off some of their classmates in the process.  So as to become better at killing others, they kidnap the Rosedale Ripper, Lowell (Durand), in hopes of being able to learn from him.  They want their kills to go viral on their Twitter and Tumblr pages.  Nobody wants to believe them when they say it’s a serial killer doing the killings.

Making its world premiere at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, Tragedy Girls screened this past week at both the Flyover Film Festival in Louisville, Ky., and the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.
