Family Guy producer to help reboot The Jetsons

The Jetsons

The Jetsons may be making a come back on the small screen in the next year or two.  Unlike the original animated series set, the reboot will be as a live-action sitcom.

TV Line first reported the news that Warner Bros. was looking to bring back George Jetson and family.  While the series will be shopped around, I’m not about to speculate on what network the series will end up at–if it gets picked up at all.  It originally aired on ABC and later airing reruns on CBS and NBC, making the show one of three series to air on the three networks.

Gary Janetti, an executive producer for Family Guy, will be developing the multi-camera sitcom.  Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke will executive produce while Jackie Levine will co-executive produce.  Producing in association with Warner Bros. Television will be Nickleby, Inc. and Compari Entertainment.

The animated series first aired for 24 episodes during 1962-63.  It was later aired in syndication in the 1980s, introducing it to a new audience with an additional 41 new episodes airing during the The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera block.  The space-age series aired as a counterpart to the prehistoric series, The Flintstones.

After the deaths of voice actors George O’Hanlon and Mel Blanc, Jetsons: The Movie in 1990 served as the series finale.  Well, it was until the release of The Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! earlier this year.

An animated film is still in the works with Matt Lieberman penning the screenplay and Conrad Vernon attached to direct.

Hopefully, the live action series won’t be as bad as the treatment was for The Flintstones movies.

UPDATE: ABC is now teaming up with Warner Bros. Television for the live-action reboot per The Hollywood Reporter.  ABC has a put pilot commitment in place.
