Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins not signed for sequel

It was reported today that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has not yet signed on for the film’s sequel.

I would expect that this will change soon and also come with a hefty pay raise following the film’s opening weekend.  Wonder Woman is expected to smash Tom Cruise’s The Mummy at the box office this weekend.

With actress Gal Gadot playing one of the DC trinity, she has options in her contract for appearing in multiple films including Wonder Woman 2.  Given the reaction to the latest batch of DC films, I can understand why they were so hesitant to give Jenkins an option.  After all, the only movie she previously directed was Monster in 2003.  This could prove to be a multi-million dollar mistake for Warner Brothers, a studio that has a standard one-movie deal for those directors that are moving from indie films to making studio blockbusters.

Sources say the studio intends to begin negotiations with Jenkins shortly (although the exact timing is unclear), and the filmmaker and her reps at CAA, Anonymous Content and Jackoway Tyerman will enjoy enormous leverage. Jenkins could not only return to the director’s chair on Wonder Woman 2 but also could ink a more expansive deal that would allow her to work with DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns on a script treatment for that movie and possibly others as well.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news today.

Wonder Woman is currently playing in theaters now.
