The SAG Award nominations were announced this morning and they were not without some shockers.
The biggest shock of all was Emily Blunt’s performance in October’s The Girl on the Train being nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep, Annette Bening, and Emma Stone were seen as locks for nominations. With Amy Adams, Ruth Negga, and Isabelle Huppert also in contention, it was a big question of who got the final slot.
SAG-AFTRA really shocked us. Adams squeezed in there but Blunt edged out Bening, Negga, and Huppert for the fifth slot. Bening’s Oscar chances are more or less shot right now with no nomination announced this morning for her performance in 20th Century Women.
Turning attention over to Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, this went more or less as expected. Affleck, Garfield, Gosling, and Washington were lock. It was just a question of who got the fifth slot. Viggo Mortensen’s performance in Captain Fantastic edged out Tom Hanks for the final slot. Does this kill Hanks’ chance at a nomination for Sully? Hard to say. I thought Joel Edgerton would get some love for Loving but they were completely shut out today.
None of the major nominations in the supporting actor category have been consistent with each other. Mahershala Ali, Jeff Bridges, and Dev Patel were all locks. It was a question of who got the final two slots. Lucas Hedges and Hugh Grant picked up the remaining slots. Hedges’ performance in Manchester by the Sea was not nominated by HFPA while Grant was considered as a lead actor in a comedy/musical for her performance in Florence Foster Jenkins.
The supporting actress category lined up with the Golden Globes. Octavia Spencer got more love from the HFPA and SAG than her Hidden Figures co-star, Janelle Monáe, did by the BFCA. The BFCA nominated Greta Gerwig but she was not nominated by the HFPA and SAG. I expect that the five nominees will hear their names in January when the Oscar nominations are announced.
As far as Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture is concerned, La La Land not nominated. They were not likely to win as Moonlight has always been one of the favorites to win this one but it makes the road to an Oscar win that much harder. Braveheart was the last film to win at the Oscars without being nominated by SAG.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards will air Sunday, January 29, 2017 on TNT and TBS.
